Salisbury Steak is the mystery of foods. Rarely a food that people make on their own volition, salisbury steak remains a staple of cafeterias and frozen food sections nationwide. All of the entrees were a little bit different, although the patties were eerily similarly sized and shaped, regardless of the meal. We show you what's on the box, and what's in it!

Encore's Salisbury Steak is just salisbury steak patties. They are ok enough, but the portion size is family sized and thus not really competitive with that quick craving for just a steak patty or two.
#4 Marie Callender's Salisbury Steak
An outstanding maker of pot pies and other things, Marie Callendar's exudes that "this is quality food that grandma used to make". The problem, of course, was that my grandmother never once served up a salisbury steak in her life, unless it was frozen. So, how do you try and make an intrinsically institutional food seem home cooked? Marie Callender put potatoes on it. Potatoes, mixed in with the salisbury steak patty?
The dinner is ok, but the potatoes prove to be a distraction. I can't remember too much about the sides, which pretty much sums up this meal.
#3 Stouffer's Salisbury Steak
Stouffer's always wants to be a premium sort of brand, but ultimately, they are always pretty good. Their salisbury steak came with a nice portion of mac and cheese, which I thought was an interesting idea. Unfortunately, their steak itself just wasn't that great, and the gravy struck me as a bit harsh, even almost unbreadworthy.

It's a dollar, and it's salisbury steak. The side of corn is forgettable. The mash potatoes go ok with the spoonful of gravy, but that patty works great on a sandwich, and, it's a dollar, and it's salisbury steak. We would show you what was in the box, but remember, its only a dollar, and its salisbury steak.
#1 Hungry Man Salisbury Steak
It says 1lb of food on the box. That's always a positive sign. I'm mystified by the brownie, passable for someone who makes his own from scratch, that will never come out cleanly with the fork as directed - I seem to remember apple crumb, back in the day? But that, the potatoes and green beens, all are forgivable for the great genius of the Hungry Man Salisbury Steak is that it has TWO of the salisbury steak patties.
Look at that, two patties. That is so much better (sorry Marie Callendar and Stouffer's), than a big pile of potato slices, or Mac and Cheese.
Sorry about the fork. But sometimes, you just have to show it like it is. It's a couple dollars, and its -two- salisbury steaks.
