Xeon 5520 Based MachineFresh from Newegg, the parts for my Xeon workstation - 2P ASUS Z8PE-D12 motherboard, 1 Xeon E5520, Corsair Water Cooler, 3GB of RAM and an nVidia GT250 based graphics card.
Motherboard ScrewsThe first thing I do is put the screws down in the case to mount our motherboard on. My motherboard is an SSI EEB, which turns out to be a server 12" x 13" board but with a slightly different layout. Our Antec Titan case handles it.
Backplate. There is a backplate that comes with the motherboard. It matches the connectors on the back of the board and fits into the case.
Xeon MoboThis is the motherboard shortly before it is installed into the case.
PSUWith the motherboard screwed into the case, I attach the power supply power to the board (but it is obviously unplugged from the outlet!).
CPU SocketThis is the CPU socket.
CPU BracketThis mounting bracket holds the cooler down on top of the CPU.
Mounted Cooler 1Here, the CPU and cooler have been installed. The CPU is a Xeon 5520, and the cooler is the Corsair Hydro H50.
Mounted Cooler 2This view of the CPU cooler shows the radiator mounted onto the case.
Drive BaysThese are the drive bays for this machine. Notice the fans above.
Drive MountingThe drive rails are being attached to the drive in this picture. Notice the special mounting screws and gromets to reduce vibration.
MemoryMemory for the machine is shown installed here. The motherboard manual will show what slots memory should be installed in.
Case ConnectThere are a number of small leads to the case that run to the motherboard. Shown here is the power, reset and lights.
Graphics 1This an edge on view of the graphics card, showing the DVI ports where the monitor(s) plug in.
PCI ExpressTop down view of motherboard showing PCI Express 2.0 x 16 slot (blue), where graphics card plug goes.
Graphics PowerThe graphics card is mounted, and the power plug is fitted to it. At this point, we've got all of our major components plugged in! |
