It was school break, and I had my six year old son for a week. I had just gotten paid. "I want to see sharks", my son said. I knew right away that Camden Adventure Aquarium was the place to go.
Located just across the Ben Franklin Bridge in Camden, NJ, the Adventure Aquarium, along with the USS New Jersey, are the cornerstones of an ongoing effort to revitalize Camden's beautiful Delaware River waterfront. Dominated by an enormous fish tank where divers play with sharks, the Adventure Aquarium features a number of exhibits that families can explore together. Young children especially enjoy the pen where they can touch sharks.
Parking is easy and its not far to walk from the parking lot to the aquarium. We did not have to wait in line during our weekday visit. We walked nearly up to the ticket counter, paid with a credit/debit card, and walked right in.
One of the great attractions is an enormous african river scene, the centerpiece of which is an enormous tank filled with numerous exotic fish that also serves as a home for a pair of hippos. Exotic birds fly by, and make nests, as the hippos relax nestled against each other.
Here, a boy gazes into the massive hippo tank.
In another large tank, divers stage a mock duel for the crowd, with their cleaning tools.
The Camden Aquarium has numerous ports, including an amazing shark tunnel. My son walked through that thing and just about lept onto me when he saw the first shark swim overhead! In the below photo, a shark circles above the previously shown divers.
There is a great concession stand with burgers and hotdogs. Today, a man on stilts helped celebrate the birthday of one of the hippos.
